This patch came with Marlboro gear as a spare patch for equipment if one was lost.  Marlboro of course wanted to make sure that their advertising stayed intact on their gear. They thought of everything during this advertising campaign.
These vintage 1990's promotional items from Marlboro's largest promotional campaign in its history were very popular. They included hundreds of adventure gear items ranging from heavy duty camping equipment to apparel. These items were made in Germany where the whole adventure team concept was hatched.
Marlboro went all out on their marlboro miles gear to get people to smoke more. It worked with this wildly successful campaign. This was because they produced excellent high quality gear to reward the smokers.
These patches were always included as extras when gear was shipped out.
