WORLD WAR I - ZEPPELIN BOMBING. At the beginning of World War I, the German command used Zeppelins as long range bombers against the United Kingdom. In August and September of 1917, the Germans launched major Zeppelin raids in Sheffield, Manchester, and Liverpool. The Zeppelin marked a major technological change in modern warfare.
WORLD WAR I ZEPPELIN AIR RAID REPORT PROVIDING A DETAILED EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE ATTACK FROM A BRITISH AIR RAID SPOTTER
Autograph document handwritten by John Allen Sidney Coleman unsigned providing a, “Report of Air Raid Duty,” that includes a detailed eyewitness account of a Zeppelin attack to his superior, “I was awakened at 11.25 by firing of guns and as soon as possible reported myself to police as I live but 9 doors from the station...two Bombs or shells had dropped there (one did not explode) & I found one of the men from the Engine House had a slight word in the arm which I dressed & then proceeded to Clarendon road where I found a house had been struck and a soldier on leave who had been hurt.” Coleman a British air raider spotter who assisted in shooting down the Zeppelin L-33 airship used by the Germans to bomb London, which contained the only armed German soldiers to set foot in England in 1916. The document is two pages on a single leaf, measures 10.25 by 7 inches, dated September 4, 1917, and in very fine condition with only minor soiling.
