Description
This outstanding collection relates to James M.K. Heubner's service during World War I. Huebner was from Allentown, PA and was the grandson of 19th century millionaire James Kistler Mosser. Huebner attended Pennsylvania Military Academy and in 1917 was a member of the Supply Company, 4th Infantry, Pennsylvania National Guard.During the war Huebner was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the 107th Machine Gun Battalion, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Force. It appears that Huebner served as an instructor at machine gun school during the majority of his service. This collection includes:
A 1917 vellum identification sheet presented to Huebner by the mayor of Allentown
Photos of Huebner during his time at the Pennsylvania Military Academy and the Pennsylvania National Guard
2 AEF identification cards - 1 includes a photo of Heubner in uniform.
Officer's Record Book detailing Huebner's courses of instruction, service, duties away from regiment, and remarks on his service, noting that Huebner was "an excellent officer who has the ability to instruct and make things understood."
Outstanding handwritten notebook (44 pages) from Huebner's time at Gas School in Chaumont, France. Content includes gas defense; chemical components of gas; history of cloud gas; history of gas shells; identification of gas shells; classes of gas shells; german shell sizes; meteorology and gasses; estimation of wind speed; direction of wind; classification of gasses; evolution and inspection of masks; gas alarms and warnings; gas proofing and clearing;offensive use of gas shells, and more. Incredible content, and rare for a gas school book kept in France to have survived.
