    Description

Vintage historical original World War 1 German Leaflet dropped by plane and possibly other means in October, 1918, on advancing American, French and other allied forces.  It is not dated but from research including below it can be determined it was dropped in Oct.   One side is in English other side French.   Germany is offering peace from the 'new German democratic government' and proclaiming 'The will of the people is the highest law.'  They present a number of peace talking points including no additional U-Boat War.  And if Germany's offer is not accepted they say they are not to blame for further bloodshed.   Germany obviously knew the war was about to end and they were desperate.
President Harry S. Truman was an artillery captain in France during World War I.  He sent this same leaflet home to his wife Bess in a letter dated October 30, 1918, which is on display in the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library.   The Nazis will later blame this new German democratic government for stabbing Germany in the back and claim that the army never lost a battle in the field.  The British National Army Museum also displays the leaflet and one French solider described the leaflet drop as follows:
'October 28 ? This afternoon a Boche, flying very high, crosst our lines, braved the anti-aircraft fire and emptied a load of propaganda. The glistening sheets floating upon a gentle breeze seemed to tarry in the downward flight. We were on the gun at the time and the little beggars fell into our midst? This is so much effort wasted.  Of course the clumsy mind of the German High Command images that a sheet of printed matter will wreck the morale of our troops?'
Measures approx. 6.25 x 8.75".  Condition is good there is creasing and small tear one side of middle crease from 100+ years of storage.  Fading normal with extensive age.  Paper is fragile handle with care as it is museum quality document.  Zoom in on pics as part of description.
