    Description

An antique bronze medal commemorating the WWI French defense of Verdun from February to November of 1916. Verdun coins were originally intended as unofficial medals for the soldiers who defended Verdun, but ended up also being awarded to Argonne and St. Mihiel sector soldiers who served between 1914 and 1918. Both sides of this medal are decorated, the front with a bust of Marianne, the national emblem of the French Republic, and the inscription "On Ne Passe Pas" (They Shall Not Pass), and the back with the image of a twin towered Porte Chausee in Verdun framed by a laurel with the words "Verdun, 21 Fevrier 1916". The coin's front is also marked "S.E. Vernier 1917". Approx. 1.5" in diameter and weighs approx. 24g/0.8oz. Also comes with original papers and protective red leather case. Good antique condition, just light general wear and some tarnish to bronze - see pictures. This is an awesome piece of WWI militaria!
