    Description

Cold War US Air Force Strategic Air Command Document Set - All Named to a Career PilotTen (10) certificates and a photograph dating from the glory days of Strategic Air Command (SAC), spanning 1949 to 1961. Colonel Bjorgen was a career pilot who began flying P-51s in 1943 and ended his career commanding a specialized unit that supported the National Capital Region during the Nixon administration. In the photograph (14 5/8" x 11 1/4"), Colonel "BJ" is standing to the far right. The certificates related to the B-47 Bomber airframe are of particular significance, as the B-47 was the SAC mainstay during the Cold War. The Boeing B-47 Stratojet (Boeing company designation Model 450) was a long-range, six-engine, turbojet powered strategic bomber designed to fly subsonic at high altitude to avoid enemy interceptor aircraft. The primary mission of the B-47 was as a nuclear bomber capable of striking targets within the Soviet Union.
