The 533i is a ,000* luxury sedan engineered for a single purpose: to refine raw power into unadulterated fun.
The power is generated by 3.2 liters of fuel-injected “smoothness and ferocity" (Car and Driver). An engine directly descended from the six-cylinder BMW racing engines weaned on the Nurburgring, Hockenheim, and other great racecourses of Europe.
The engine is assisted by a BMW
innovation called Digital Motor Electronics — a microprocessor-based system that assures that fuel ignition occurs at the optimum instant for maximum performance.
As a result, the 533i can do 0 to 60 in only 7.7 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in a pulse-quickening 15.8.
But the 533i is engineered on the belief that sheer power is meaningless (if not imprudent) in a car unequipped to handle it.
Which is why the 533i is endowed with a fully-independent suspension that makes even the most sinister roads far less forbidding. One reason: a new breakthrough in rear-suspension design that minimizes the unsettling effects of tight cornering and heavy braking.
