THE FORERUNNER OF IMITATIONS TO COME.
    THE BMW 528e.
It seems the automotive establishment has caught up with automotive enthusiasts in their affection for BMW’s.
Lately, affection has become ardor — as witnessed by the number of cars resembling BMW’s, comparing themselves to BMW’s, and even claiming to perform “like” BMW's.
BMW shares this vision of what a car should be in the eighties, with one major disclaimer: cars should be motivated by foresight, not hindsight. And no better example exists than the technologically advanced BMW 528e.
THE 1982 CAR THAT WON’T BE IRRELEVANT BY 1987.
The 528e is a luxury performance sedan that escapes further categorization largely because its category doesn't exist yet.
It is the sort of car other car makers, or those of them who value performance, will someday have to attempt — one that turns minimum energy into maximum performance.
The 528e accomplishes this through an inspired paradox called the "Eta” engine.
It runs slower than conventional 6-cylinder engines, stretching fuel in the process. Yet at the same time, it develops higher torque (or power) at those slower engine speeds — speeds at which the car is most often driven.
The result is the sort of exhilarating engine response you would expect if fuel efficiency were no obstacle: because in the 528e, it isn’t.
Deep within the engine, where the important fuel efficiency decisions are made, another BMW innovation makes sure those decisions are always made in favor of maximum performance.
Digital Motor Electronics is an electronic system that constantly monitors the engine and assures that fuel ignition occurs at the optimum moment. It also cuts off fuel flow to cylinders when they’re not needed, allowing the car to run on its own momentum during deceleration, saving fuel for acceleration.
All this makes for a car that performs extraordinarily well because of the fact that it’s extraordinarily efficient, not in spite of it. Which helps explain its mileage figures, unsurpassed by any gasoline-powered car in its price class: EPA-estimated [22] mpg, [32] mpg highway.*
ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST OBEDIENT AUTOMOBILES.
The eighties are already being touted as the era of the personal car, a time when driver regains mastery over automobile. As trailblazers forge ahead in this direction, they’ll find the trail has been previously blazed by the 528e.
Its suspension is a refinement of a design so advanced. Car and Driver termed it "the single most significant breakthrough in front suspension design in this decade.”
The resulting agility is complemented by its steering, highly responsive m the manner of all BMW’s (a legacy of its racing forebears). On the road, it is one of the most obedient cars in the world.
It is also one of the best protected. The 528e is covered by a 3-year/ 36.000-mile limited warranty, plus a 6-year limited warranty against rust perforation.*
And inside, it is an ergonomic model of easily accessible controls, contoured seats, and many other highly functional amenities.
But despite all this, no claim is made for the 528e as the Car of the Future.
It is not a car designed for mass-market accolades, but rather for a finite number of serious drivers — enthusiasts who’ve watched the performance characteristics of cars diminish in tandem with the world’s fuel supply.
For those people, the 528e may well be a deliverance.
You may judge for yourself at your nearest BMW dealer, where the 528e awaits your test drive.
BMW - THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE
You are looking at a quantum leap.
At a casual glance, the new BMW 528e is a look-alike for its predecessor. In reality, it constitutes a giant leap forward into the automotive future.
It is, in a word - a much-used, much-misused word - revolutionary. Its engine, especially.
The ‘e’ in 528e stands for eta, the engineering symbol for thermodynamic efficiency; BMW uses it to refer to both the engine and the efficiency concept designed into every facet of the car, from engine to suspension to space and comfort to aerodynamic shape.
The radical BMW eta engine was singlemindedly - and brilliantly - designed to enable people to benefit from a totally new driving style. For example, the unusually long intake manifold pipes (centre of picture) are acoustically tuned and shaped to draw much more air into the combustion chambers at low engine speeds. And more air translates into more power.
The eta engine actually produces the same torque as its predecessor, the 528i - at substantially lower engine speeds. The effect on gasoline consumption is remarkable. The city gas mileage rating of the 528e is 21 percent better than that of the 528i; the improvement is even more dramatic when based on the 1978 530i - a 50 percent increase. Performance is unimpaired: Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is estimated at under 10 seconds. Economy plus performance: with the 528e, you can have your cake and eat it, too.
How was such a dramatic leap achieved?
BMW started from scratch. Its engineers conducted exhaustive studies on driving techniques and gasoline consumption and uncovered some startling new information.
Conventional wisdom has long held that smooth, gentle acceleration is the best way to get good gas mileage. BMW found that hard acceleration, using about three-quarters throttle, accompanied by shifting gears at low engine speeds, is the most fuel-efficient way of getting to cruising speed. "Gently does it?” Not so, it seems; the opposite approach works better!
More surprises. Even at higher rpm levels, the three-quarter throttle technique is more fuel-efficient than a light foot. The key is to accelerate quickly to the next shift point, be it 2,000 or 4,000 rpm or more.
A check control readout panel above the rearview mirror pinpoints spedfic problem areas after a warning light has alerted the driver that something is awry.
The reasoning is simple. Friction is the enemy of efficiency (the less time pistons and valves spend zipping up and down, the better). If an engine can provide more power at lower engine speeds, the pistons and shafts will rub less, the valves will open and shut less frequently. Less friction equals less energy expended, less fuel used, more torque delivered.
The new 528e has been designed specifically to put BMW’s startling discoveries to work. Use a heavy foot, and even at low engine speeds the 528e delivers the power to accelerate briskly. Shifting as early as 2,000 rpm (way down the “normal” rev scale) produces acceleration quick enough to move you easily through traffic - without the need to downshift to “get a move on.” Thus, the sporty feel BMW drivers are accustomed to is maintained - along with the benefit of increased efficiency.
A sober aside: it may well be that "before eta”, all gasoline engines were designed on a platform of erroneous information. ("Off with his head; the earth is flat!).
Another significant advance pioneered on the 528e is digital motor electronics. DME is an on-board computer, a microprocessor which exerts far more control over the engine than other systems - including electronic fuel injection.
The tachometer "red-lines” at a mere 4,800 rpm. Disconcerting at first, but when you can draw on ample power at 2,000rpm, who needs high revs? Below the tach, a fuel consumption gauge tells you exactly how much gas you’re using per 100 kilometres. You can actually see the startling results of BMW research, apply them, and save money.
DME controls the L-Jetronic fuel injection system, and works with an oxygen sensor to control fuel emissions and ignition timing. Based on such factors as engine load, speed, temperature, and oxygen data, it works out the ideal fuel/air mixture and ignition timing for top efficiency — thousands of times a second. Really!
When the engine is not producing power, as in slowing, braking or going down hill, DME cuts off the fuel until idle speed is reached. There's more. Data on road conditions, mileage, and fuel consumption is processed by the computer and displayed on a highly-accurate fuel consumption gauge. Paying attention to this little doo-dad could reduce your gasoline costs significantly.
Working in concert with the eta engine and DME is a five-speed transmission that shifts with satisfying smoothness (three-speed automatic is available) and a low final-drive ratio.
The 528e efficiency story goes far beyond the drive-train, however.
The body of the car has been drastically redesigned. The 528e has a new engine bay fairing; a redesigned grille; a lowered wedge shape in the hood area, which reduces lift; improved flow around the windshield; and a raised rear, which reduces lift and improves the vortex pattern. All resulting in an aerodynamic, improvement of some 15 percent.
The 528e sports a further development of the revolutionary - and BMW-patented - double-pivot front suspension first introduced on the flagship of BMW sedans, the 733i. BMW engineers took "the single most significant breakthrough in front suspension design in this decade” (Car & Driver) - and then improved upon it. The result is virtually unprecedented agility.
If you make a mistake, or succumb to temptation and scream around a corner, or hit a railway crossing while going too fast or have to make a panic stop, the 528e will do it with incredible aplomb.
Front end dive, leaning into corners, and other regrettable tendencies, are virtually abolished. And yet this is by no means a “hard” suspension. As one not-especially-accomplished driver said: “It makes me look like an expert”. It also means you will be exceedingly comfortable, decidedly more safe - and may even learn to love to drive again!
The 528e interior is not only functional - a typical BMW priority - it is very tastefully colour co-ordinated. Rear legroom has also been increased.
Cruise control is standard equipment on the 528e, as is a new electronic heating and air conditioning control. Once set, the temperature inside the car remains constant. An electrical central locking system operates all four doors, trunk and gascap at one turn of the key.
Finally, like all BMWs, the revolutionary new 528e is beautifully made and tastefully appointed - a pride to own and, in particular, a joy to drive. What is more, at ,000 or so* it costs little more than its predecessor. These days, that fact is almost as incredible as the engineering.
*Rear seat headrests and mag wheels shown are extra cost options.
