Description
1914-1918 Belgian Winged Victory Medal Pendant.Instituted 15th July 1919 and awarded to all those who served between the 1st August 1914 and the 11th November 1918. Description; 36mm in bronze, obverse depicts winged victory standing on a radiant globe, arms outstretched holding a sword and a laurel wreath. Reverse depicts a circular array of shields of the allied nations with the French/Flemish inscription "DE GROOTE OORLOG TOT DE BESCHAVING * LA GRANDE GUERRE POUR LA CIVILISATION" around the perimeter.
The Victory medal was awarded to all members of the Belgian Armed Forces who served during the World War I. The Allies resolved that, if they wished to issue a Victory Medal, it would share a common feature of a depiction of Victory on the obverse. No more than 350,000 Belgian Victory Medals were issued. A small number until you realize that Belgium only had a population of 7.5 million and a pre-war Army of 43,000 men. The designer was Paul Dubois, a noted Belgian sculptor. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9daille_de_la_Victoire_1914-1918_(Belgique).
