1855 Slanted 55's Large Cent, KNOB ON EAR variety, Fine Grade.

Description

Presented here at Auction is a Fine grade 1855 Large Cent.  One will immediately notice that this is the italic 55'S type.  Closer inspection will see a rather early state of the KNOB ON EAR.  There is some die crumbling evident, as there is die cracking showing in the RTY area of LIBERTY on the obverse.  The planchet is corrosion free, however I note two thing that I wish to point out.  First, I see a small obverse mark.  This is looking like a "dig" to me, showing to the left of the date.  Not much, but it is there.  Then on the reverse, I note that the rims in the areas between 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock have been tamped down, perhaps with a mallot??  Anyway, the rims are a bit rough due to what ever took place years ago.  Overall, a presentable KNOB ON EAR variety of the Large Cents.  This one may go cheaper due to the reverse rim "smoothing".
