    Description

    Here we have a
Late 1800's ERLANDSEN Rosewood, Bone & Brass BOW DRILL w/ Steel & Hardwood Handle BOW  !!
The bow drill has been in use for centuries as one of the first tools used to drill a hole. The earliest adopters of the tool were stone masons, who used the first heavy and crude tools, and the jewelers and musical instrument makers, particularly piano makers, who used the finely crafted tools of Rosewood, brass, bone, etc.
During the later part of the 19th century, there developed a tight-knit industry of craftsmen in New York City who made tools for the highly specialized trade of piano and organ builder. Most well known of these makers is Napoleon Erlandsen and his son Julius. Many examples of their bow drills exist today and are highly prized by collectors. Erlandsen was by trade a machinist and his drills were precision made. They had steel main shafts with bone pulleys and rosewood handles.
    There
    is no maker name
    on this tool.
    This
    very nice example of a
'Bow Drill Stock' is obviously made by Erlandsen but his mark, which was usually stamped in the Rosewood handle, has long since disappeared.
The 8-Sided handle is Rosewood and all of the brass parts have their nice patina finish. The chuck is a nice gunmetal/steel with decorative engraved rings.  The bone pulley/spool has the usual age cracks that you see in a very high number of these pieces.  The pulley/spool revolves well and has a nice, no wobble, solid feel. The spool cracks do not affect the function. This drill stock is 11" Long.  You also get a nice tapered steel  29" long bow with hardwood handle and brass ferrule.  There are no cracks in the handle.  This Bow Drill Set is in very good 'used tool' condition with minor nick and dings to the surfaces.  Please note the age-related cracks in the bone spool was discussed above.  Please review all pictures !!  This is a very nice set
    to add to your collection.
